Joel I. Berman, is Vice President of Health Science Associates, a full service Industrial Hygiene and Environmental consulting firm, and a senior associate of MPGroup. Mr. Berman is a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), a Certified Safety Professional (CSP), a Certified Indoor Air Quality Manager (CIAQM), a California Certified Asbestos Consultant (CAC), and a California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Lead Sampling Technician (LST). His duties include project oversight of HSA’s professional and technician staff, project set-up, field investigations, report writing and review, expert witness testimony, etc. He has a BS in Business Administration with an option in Marketing from California State University, Long Beach State (1987).
Mr. Berman has been employed with HSA since 1985. He has performed various duties with HSA, including: Industrial Hygiene technician; project manager; Industrial Hygienist; Director of Health and Safety Services; and Vice President. He has provided consulting to HSA’s clientele on various health and safety issues including, but not limited to: asbestos; fungal investigations (including residential; commercial; industrial, etc.); lead; radon; mercury; indoor air quality; safety evaluations; program preparation, review, and management; construction; Job Hazard Analysis (JHA); reviewing safety data sheet (SDS); and in the Southern California area is a well-known and respected expert witness in various areas of practice, including asbestos, pesticides, indoor air quality, and fungal contamination cases/issues.
Mr. Berman has authored one published article, “Bottling Up Water-Intrusion Claims,” Claims, A National Underwriter Publication, Vol. 53, No. 7, July 2005, Page 70. The article was written to provide claims adjusters with advice related to the proper handling of a water intrusion event. The article also outlined many pitfalls that some consultants will use to either downplay or exacerbate the effects of a water intrusion event.
Mr. Berman has also served in three capacities on the board of the Orange County Section of the American Industrial Hygiene Association (OCAIHA). The board positions held include: Secretary; Professional Development Director, and Government Affairs. The primary responsibilities of the Secretary, during the times when Mr. Berman held the position, included taking board minutes and issuing the bi-monthly newsletter. Mr. Berman and served two terms as Secretary-elect and then Secretary.
The primary responsibilities of Professional Development Director position includes working with one other local AIHA section and two or three other local ASSE chapters to sponsor, organize, and put on a one day Joint Technical Symposium (JTS). Mr. Berman has served approximately five terms as Professional Development Director-elect and subsequently Professional Development Director.
The Government Affairs position allows Mr. Berman to serve on the board of the California Industrial Hygiene Council (CIHC). The CIHC is designated as the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) State Governmental Affairs Organization in California. The duties of a CIHC board member include tracking legislation that appears to have a potential effect on the Industrial Hygiene Profession, providing comments to the author of the legislation, and interacting with the staff of the author to discuss concerns regarding the proposed legislation.
Since 2011 Mr. Berman has also served as a member of the AIHA Stewardship and Sustainability Committee.
